Abstract
This paper seeks to give an overview of theories on language, translation and ideology over the past 40 years, and then to provide exemplification of select ideological linguistic devices (i.e., lexical cohesion elements in the translation of political speeches) as implemented by translators. We also attempt here to study lexical cohesion elements in the translation of political speeches in relation to ideology, and its control, through bias, and distortion. We would demonstrate how the analysis of lexical cohesion elements in the translation of political speeches can contribute to the comprehension of power relations and ideological process in discourse and how the analysis of such elements uncover the underlying ideologies mediated through discourse.
