Abstract
Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a main cause of hospitalizations and amputations in diabetic patients that result from neuropathy and ischemia. Failure of traditional standard foot care is the most important cause of impaired DFUs healing. Dakin’s solution (sodium hypochlorite) is a promising broad spectrum bactericidal antiseptic to be used for the management of DFUs. Studies investigating the efficacy of using sodium hypochlorite solution on DFU healing process are scarce.
Research question and hypothesis: Is the use of Dakin’s solution effective for the management of infected DFUs?
Study Design: This is the first randomized control trial study conducted to assess these effects.
Method: the patients were randomly distributed to the control (DFUs were irrigated with normal saline) and intervention group (DFUs were irrigated with 0.1% Dakin’s solution). The patients were followed for a period of at least 24 weeks for healing, reinfection and amputations.
